In what could turn out to be a straight swap, Lotus have reportedly approached Martin Whitmarsh about the vacant team boss job.
Last Friday, Lotus announced that team boss Eric Boullier had left the team with immediate effect with Gerard Lopez taking the reigns.
And although McLaren have yet to confirm a vacancy, Boullier is believed to be on his way to McLaren, replacing the beleaguered Whitmarsh.
In turn Whitmarsh could yet take Boullier's place at Lotus.
"There has been contact with Martin," an 'insider who has close links to to Lotus' told the Daily Mail.
"He is not necessarily the only name they have approached.
"There are perhaps three but he might be the most appealing of them, given his experience at McLaren."
