Honda making 'steady progress'

Honda's planned return as engine manufacturer for the 2015 Formula One season is progressing well, the Japanese automaker revealed on Friday.

Honda confirmed in 2013 that it would return to the sport in two years' time as engine supplier to McLaren, with whom they formed a title-winning partnership during the 1980s and '90s.

"The company is making steady progress in developing the power unit," a Honda press release revealed.

Its European base will be situated Milton Keynes, where they will rebuild and maintain the power units that were originally developed at Honda's development centre in Tokyo.

Honda entered the sport in the 1960s but withdrew from Formula One at the end of the 2008 season in an attempt to cut costs, and sold its F1 team to Ross Brawn the following year.

However, due to the recent changes to the F1 engine rules which forces the teams to switch to V6 turbo engines, Honda announced its return to the sport since the development that would be done on its power units could be applicable to its commercial vehicles.

The McLaren-Honda partnership was most successful from 1988 to 1991, when Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost dominated the sport.

Honda then left the sport in 1992 but returned after an eight-year hiatus as engine provider and part-owner of the BAR team from 2000 to 2005, before taking full ownership of the team in 2006.
