Jonathan Neale insists too much has been read into Ron Dennis' recent comments to Jenson Button, saying that's just Ron.
Last week questions about Button's future made headlines when Dennis publicly urged his driver, who is out of contract at the end of this season, to "try harder."
The McLaren CEO told Sky Sports F1: "Do I want him to try harder? Of course I do.
"He is a highly paid grand prix driver, and yes we are not giving him the best car, yes it would be challenging for him to win in this car to say the least, but he could do his bit, and Kevin's got to make it as difficult for him as possible."
However, McLaren's COO Neale says Dennis' comments are par for the course.
"I think he did the same thing to Ayrton Senna," he said during Friday's press conference at Silverstone.
In fact it's not just F1's greatest driver who has been urged to try harder by Dennis.
Neale added: "I'm pretty sure he did the same thing to Kevin. I think if you listen to my phone on a daily basis he'll be doing the same thing to me. It's chip paper.
