'MP4-29 a laboratory for next year'

'MP4-29 a laboratory for next year'

Eric Boullier believes McLaren can learn a lot for next season by using this year's car on a "laboratory" on wheels.

This season McLaren have once again under-performed despite starting the Championship with a double podium finish in Australia.

Since then, the team's best results have been two fourth placed finishes leaving them down in sixth place in the Constructors' Championship.

But despite their woes, Racing Director says there is still a lot to be learned from this season as the team prepares to swap to Honda power in 2015.

"If you remember the regulations (for 2015), the pick-up points are the same for the chassis and the gearbox," he said.

"So we are developing this car, and we are going to keep developing it for a long time as most of the upgrades will carry over to next year.

"That is why we are using this car as, let's say, a laboratory for next year."

And although the Woking team are languishing down in sixth place at present, Boullier believes they can fight back in the second half of the Championship

"Everybody is working hard to get to where we want to go, and that work is paying off," he added.

"You can see on track we are bringing upgrades every race, and we are starting to work a little bit in a higher position.

"So, as mentioned, we will keep developing this year's car as far as possible and for as long as possible as we obviously prepare for the arrival of our new engine partner for next year."
