McLaren are confident of challenging the likes of Red Bull by the time the Singapore Grand Prix takes place at the end of September, where a major update will be applied.
During a McLaren phone-in earlier this week, team Racing Director Eric Boullier confirmed that the Woking outfit will should have a big update for its car ready for the start of the flyaway races, and they are confident of challenging the Ferrari, Williams and Red Bull as being the 'best of the rest' behind the peerless Mercedes car.
"It is true that getting in front of Force India was a short-term target, but it is not the final ambition," Boullier said.
"I do feel comfortable and confident about a stronger end of season than beginning.
"Our car is working decently on low downforce tracks like Spa and [hopefully] Monza, but from Singapore we will have another big upgrade on the car which I hope will deliver all that is promised.
"We should have another couple of updates before the end of the season which should clear us definitely from Force India, but also fighting in the middle of Ferrari and Williams, and Red Bull maybe.
"I have no idea if we get another podium before the end of the season but if we do our job properly then maybe."
Although McLaren have moved into fifth place ahead of Force India in the Constructors' Championship standings, they are unlikely to move further up the standings this season.
The Woking outfit is currently 45 points adrift of Williams and 10 more behind Red Bull, while Red Bull have a 149-point advantage.
