Tambay: Vergne could have won

Tambay: Vergne could have won

Patrick Tambay, a former Ferrari driver and now a French commentator, believes Toro Rosso nearly created a chance for Jean-Eric Vergne to win in Monaco.

Vergne was running in an impressive seventh place with seven laps to go when the team decided to switch him to intermediate tyres with the threat of rain increasing.

The pit stop saw the rookie fall back to 12th spot and as it did not rain enough to influence proceedings and so he was not able to seize an advantage from switching tyres.

While the decision in the end cost Vernge his second points-scoring finish of the season, Tambay believes it almost turned out to be a stroke of genius.

"If it had rained, with tyres that his team has adopted, he could have won," Tambay told RMC Sport.

"Everyone would have been on very worn dry tyres that were designed for a dry track and so would have had a lot of trouble staying on track. Other drivers would have dived into the pits but it would have been risky with so few laps to run.

"However, with [intermediate] tyres Vergne could pass a number of cars. It is quite possible that he could have won the Monaco GP."
