Hakkinen: Verstappen too young for F1

Former World Champion Mika Hakkinen believes "there is no way" that Max Verstappen will be ready for Formula 1 next season.

Dutch youngster Verstappen, who will turn 17 in September, will become F1's youngest ever driver next year after he was signed to partner Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso.

Former McLaren assistant team manager Tony Jardine has claimed that senior drivers on the track won't be happy to have someone that young on the grid, but two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso insists everyone has to wait and see how he performs before giving an opinion.

Hakkinen, who made his F1 debut at the age of 23 back in 1991, insists 17 is too young.

"There is no way a driver can be ready for Formula 1 at the age of 16 or 17," he said in his latest interview with .myhermes.de. "I would never, either as a manager of father, let a driver as young as that race in F1. It's too early, and if it fails, it can cause a lot of damage."
