Gutierrez wants more 'aggression'

Esteban Gutierrez reckons Sauber need to adopt a more aggressive approach to qualifying in order to give them a helping hand on a Sunday.

Still without a single World Championship point to his name, Gutierrez has struggled to work his way forward on a Sunday afternoon after disappointing outings on Saturdays.

The Mexican rookie, who has netted a best qualifying position of P14 twice this season, has spent much of the year failing to make it out of Q1.

Determined to put that right in the final seven races of his debut season, Gutierrez has urged his team to change their approach.

"In qualifying, we've not been aggressive enough with strategy," the 22-year-old told Autosport.

"Considering I'm a rookie, the mentality is probably to give me a bit more chance, maybe a few more laps and be a bit more conservative by going earlier on in the sessions.

"This is affecting me because we are not [qualifying] in the peak time of the track and track conditions and at the same time you have more fuel load.

"It's a combination of both because knowing that I have three, four flying laps I don't get the most out of the tyres in the beginning.

"Most of the strategies in qualifying will be focused on maximising that part [being more aggressive] and being more on the edge of strategy."

And although he admits this could lead to more mistakes, the Sauber driver is prepared to take that chance.

"Probably in some moments I will make some mistakes, you know it's going to be part of the process but I am keen to make the next step.

"It's now time to because if I go out in qualifying and make no mistakes and I'm just not quick enough, I would prefer to make a mistake and know that I could be quick."
