Gutierrez pleased to raise his level

Esteban Gutierrez believes his qualifying performance in Singapore did his career the world of good, but he knows he needs to build on that.

The Mexican rookie outqualified his more experienced team-mate Nico Hulkenberg for the first time at the Marina Bay Street Circuit while he also made it into Q3 for the first time in his career.

Naturally Gutierrez is confident his display is a sign of things to come.

"It was a very powerful feeling, because you can use it for the future," he told Autosport.

"When you are able to manage such a lap in qualifying, it brings you to another level, which you can use to keep building even more.

"Maybe at some tracks we are not going to be that strong in qualifying, but at least to challenge ourselves to keep improving in that direction is very important."

Although he had high hopes of picking his first points up on the Sunday, he had to settle for 12th place in the end as his rear tyres were shot during the latter stages of the race.

The 22-year-old Sauber driver, though, is hoping for more good results in the near future.

"Obviously [it is frustrating] but you give your best and in the race, I gave all I had," he said.

"You always want to make another step, to keep improving and this comes together with experience.

"The race was another good step in my career and I am determined to keep going forward in the next races even though we have a difficult challenge."
