Claire Williams concedes that following up a great Austrian GP with a dismal FP1 at Silverstone is a "bit Williams-esque."

For many seasons Williams have experienced the highs and the lows of Formula 1 and it was more of the same in first practice for the British GP.

Arriving at Silverstone, the team's home race, on the back of their best points-haul of this season in Austria, both FW36s were back in the garage within half an hour of FP1.

While development driver Susie Wolff broke down with an engine issue, Felipe Massa suffered a heavy crash.

There were more problems later in the day when, during FP2, Valtteri Bottas' engine cover crumpled, forcing him back into the pits with a damaged car.

Deputy team boss Williams says unfortunately that's all part of Williams' story.

She told Autosport: "It's a bit Williams-esque to do that.

"It's like winning a race and having a garage fire [as Williams did at Barcelona in 2012].

"But that's F1. You have your ups and downs. We like a challenge at Williams, we've been given one today and we're ready for it.

"We'll wait and see what we can do in qualy and the race. As always the goal is to get into Q3, score points and a podium in our home race would be fantastic.

"But there's no expectation there for that, there's just hope."

Bottas finished FP1 sixth quickest, 1.508s down, while Massa was 11th, 2.163s off the pace.
