Spa tyre issue blows over

Fears that there could be more problems with the tyres at Spa this weekend have been allayed after Pirelli found the cause of Friday's blowouts.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso from Ferrari both suffered tyre failures during practice, prompting drivers to seek guarantees from the FIA and Pirelli that there would be no further problems.

There were no blowouts during the final practice session on Saturday morning and the FIA has also confirmed that Pirelli got to the bottom of the punctures suffered by Vettel and Alonso.

F1 race director Charlie Whiting told drivers that a piece of metal from Kimi Raikkonen's Lotus, which was retrieved from Turn 13 after the end of Friday's running, caused the damage.

Ferrari test driver Pedro de la Rosa, chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, told BBC Sport Online that drivers were satisfied with the explanation.

"We only asked to know what it was," the Spaniard said. "If it had been the first time we'd seen it we would have been relaxed, but after all the problems this year we were definitely concerned."
