Seb: Ferrari beat us fair and square

Although he concedes that "little mistakes here and there" cost Red Bull at Silverstone, Sebastian Vettel feels all the praise should go to Ferrari after their victory.

Fernando Alonso claimed the British Grand Prix honours on Sunday after he came from P3 on the grid to score Ferrari's first victory of the 2011 season. The Spaniard, though, had plenty of help from Red Bull after a slow second pit stop for Vettel allowed him to claim the lead which he never relinquished.

Vettel concedes Red Bull weren't at their best and their conservative approach didn't help, but he believes Ferrari deserve everything that came their way at Silverstone.

"I think it's hard to say how much we lost. Sure we lost the lead as we had quite a bit of a cushion," he said after the race. "It didn't help. I came out behind Fernando and Lewis (Hamilton) and struggled to get past. I had some places where I was quite close but it didn't quite work. I went in for my stop and had a longer stint at the end.

"All in all, we had a good race. I had a brilliant start and was able to pull away at the beginning on intermediate tyres. Then we waited a little bit and were not aggressive which cost us a bit of lead. Then we had the pit stop problem. All in all, little mistakes here and there but you can't it get right all the time. I accept that Ferrari beat us fair and square."

Vettel, who leads the Championship by 80 points after winning six of the first nine races of the season, admits Ferrari have closed the gap on Red Bull on race day.

"There's been a certain trend in the last couple of races," he added. "They have been strong on race day on Sunday. It shows us that we have to keep on working hard."
