Mercedes reveal Monaco fears

Mercedes are wary that one of the biggest advantages they've had in Monaco in recent times will be negated this year because of the pace of their 2014 car.

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg qualified the fastest in 2012 and 2013 respectively, and while those performances should be a reason for optimism, Mercedes Motor Sport boss Toto Wolff believes the opposite might be true.

During the last two seasons, Mercedes have often struggled with overheating tyres, although that often affected them positively in Monaco because they would be able to get the rubber into the perfect operating window during qualifying.

The 2014 Mercedes car is far more balanced that its predecessors, though, and Wolff believes that might be to their detriment on the streets of Monte Carlo.

"In the past on a low grip circuit like Monaco we have been able to keep the tyres alive easily," Wolff explained to Autosport.

"[But over-working the tyres] is not a problem anymore."

Nevertheless, Wolff doesn't believe Mercedes will struggle more in Monaco than at any other race of the season.

"I guess the power unit is not so important, and Monaco is always different," he continued.

"There is clearly a team that has an advantage at the moment, and on a street circuit like Monaco everything can be different.

"But then again we won there last year. It was the first rise for us, and we'd like to do it again."
