Lewis Hamilton may have missed the start of Thursday's practice in Monaco when he overslept but that did little to dampen his pace.

The Mercedes driver, who last time out in Spain took the lead in the Championship when he claimed his fourth win on the trot, created a stir on Thursday morning when he was seen running through the paddock in his civvies while his rivals were preparing for their installation laps.

Quickly into his race-suit, Hamilton began to put in the miles in his W05 and finished the session fastest of all.

Asked about his delayed start to Thursday's running, the 2008 World Champion revealed: "I overslept!"

That, though, had absolutely no impact on Hamilton's form as he edged his team-mate Nico Rosberg by 0.032s.

"To be honest [the car] felt great, I'm really surprised it started off so well really.

"I got in the car and thought it was about taking it one step at a time but the track is amazing, and the car is really behaving a lot better than it was last year for me."

But like his rivals Hamilton lost some track time in the afternoon as the rain came down between the two sessions leaving the track very wet.

He only put in some concerted laps in the final 20 minutes, finishing second quickest, 0.419s behind Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

Hamilton is confident the lost track time won't prove to be a problem as the weekend progresses.

"If we'd missed out both sessions then maybe [it would've hurt], but to get one session in the beginning was a huge plus because I got a lot of running," he said.

"I feel pretty set for Saturday."
