Turkey to be axed as Bahrain returns

The Turkish Grand Prix is set to be axed from the 2012 Formula One calendar while the Bahrain GP will return next year.

The FIA originally released a provisional 21-race calendar in June, but following concerns from officials and teams, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone decided to make a few tweaks and the latest edition contains only 20 races.

The Turkish race at Istanbul Park, which has been part of the F1 circus since 2005, was originally pencilled in for May 6 2012, but the latest changes sees it removed from the schedule. The race was a favourite for the teams, but the crowds didn't always turn up and organisers struggled to meet Ecclestone's high price race fees.

"It's a shame to lose any grand prix," Renault team principal Eric Boullier said on Friday. "But we have to deal with some change in Formula One sometimes, and we can only hope we go back there one day."

Other changes to the proposed schedule, which was circulated by Ecclestone at the Hungarian GP, see the Bahrain race back in the mix and the inaugural United States GP in Texas slotting in over the weekend of November 18.

This year's Bahrain GP, which was due to be the season-opener, didn't take place due to the political unrest in the country. Next year's race in the Gulf country will take place on November 4.
