Vergne hit with retrospective drive-through

Jean-Eric Vergne has dropped to 16th in the official classification for the US GP as the stewards deemed him responsible for his last lap crash with Esteban Gutierrez.

Fighting just outside the top ten in Sunday's race in Texas, Vergne and Gutierrez clashed resulting in the Sauber spinning of the track.

Called before the stewards, Vergne was blamed for the incident with the Toro Rosso driver being slapped with a retrospective drive-through penalty.

As a result, the Frenchman had 20 seconds added to his time which meant he dropped from 12th to 16th.

Vergne, however, blames Gutierrez for the shunt.

"On the last lap, I tried to pass my team-mate at Turn 1, and it didn't work and we ran wide, but I think he had used a bit of KERS on the straight so I couldn't pass him," he said.

"I used all my KERS on the next straight to try and outbrake him but then Gutierrez clipped my rear wheel at Turn 12 and he tried to pass me and we touched."
