Massa: Pit stop timing cost me

Felipe Massa was disappointed to miss out on a podium to his team-mate in Austria, but was pleased with Williams' performance there nonetheless.

Somewhat surprisingly, Williams secured the top two places in qualifying on Saturday as Massa finished just in front of his less experienced team-mate Valtteri Bottas in Q3.

During Sunday's race, the Williams pair got away cleanly and Massa led the race from Bottas, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton at the first round of pitstops.

The Mercedes drivers were the first to pit after closing right up to the Williams cars in front of them and when it was Massa's turn to pit, he exited between Rosberg and Hamilton.

With his tyres still cold, the Brazilian ran slightly wide into the next corner after the pit exit which allowed Hamilton past.

After Bottas too was able to jump him in the pits, Massa believes he was somewhat unlucky not to finish closer to the leaders on the day.

"I think I was not lucky when I came back on the track as I was behind one Mercedes and the other was close to me with hot tyres so passed me easily," the former Ferrari driver said after the race.

"I lost a lot of time with cars going slowly before pitting. It was a little bit of a shame."

Nevertheless, Massa is pleased after what was a good weekend for Williams in Austria.

"Looking at how many points we've had until now, I think this is like the restart for our championship," he added.
