Alonso 'optimistic' about title chance

Fernando Alonso believes as long as he improves his consistency for this season he has a good shot at walking away with the World title.

The double World Champion has had a mixed season to date and currently finds himself fourth in the Drivers' Championship, 30 points behind Sebastian Vettel.

However, it's not a lack of pace that has cost him this season. Rather it's been incidents.

A broken front wing put him out of the Malaysian Grand Prix while a DRS issues in China meant he was unable to defend himself.

"Last year we were 1.5 seconds behind the top cars," Alonso said during Thursday's press conference for the Spanish GP.

"This year we have finished two races without problems and we were second in Australia and won in China. It's a very different feeling - and very different package which brings us optimism and confidence.

"It's true we are some points behind, but the Championship is long and we have seen last year that Sebastian was 43 points behind us after the summer break and arrived with the lead in Austin. In five or six races you can recover 50 points with some consistent results.

"Until we are 75 or 80 points behind, we should be optimistic."

The Spaniard was also asked about former Lotus technical director James Allison's rumoured move to Ferrari.

And although Alonso refused to confirm the reports, he did sing the Brit's praises giving him credit for Lotus's recent run of form.

"He will choose what he prefers. Maybe he chooses to stay at home - we don't have any more news.

"I worked with him very closely [at Renault] and I was World Champion with him two times. Then I came back to Renault in 2008 and 2009; he was Technical Director and we were not so successful.

"But we have seen the Lotus car in the last two years, so it's no secret that he's one of the top men here. We'll see what the future is for him."

He added: "We are happy with what we have but extra help is always welcome."
