Raikkonen rues costly error

Kimi Raikkonen concedes that his team's decision not to bring him in for a change of tyres late in the British GP cost him a podium position.

The Lotus driver was sitting in second place when Sebastian Vettel's stalled Red Bull on the start/finish straight brought out the safety car with ten laps remaining in the race.

Many drivers took the opportunity to put on a fresh set of tyres for the final flings of the race, but Raikkonen did not, with the former World Champion enquiring over the team radio in the latter stages of the safety car period whether he was going to come in. The team responded saying 'no, that it was too late to do so and when racing got underway at the start of the 46th lap of the 52-lap race, Raikkonen soon found himself on the back-foot.

Unable to defend against drivers with new tyres, Raikkonen saw first Mark Webber, then Fernando Alonso and finally Lewis Hamilton steam passed him.

Reflecting on the turn of events, Raikkonen admits that he was helpless to defend.

"I tried to hold on at the end of the race, but with tyres that were maybe twenty laps older than the others' it was impossible to keep them behind," he said.

"It's a shame as the race went pretty well until then; we had good pace and looked set for a pretty easy P2, but this is racing sometimes."

Heading to Germany, the former Ferrari driver admits that he cannot afford to make any more mistakes.

"It's three races now where we haven't had the result we maybe expect, but hopefully if we can have a bit more luck and also get rid of some of the mistakes we'll be able to get back to the front," he said.
