FP2: Red Bull Hit The Front

FP2: Red Bull Hit The Front

Red Bull found their groove in Free Practice Two at the Nurburgring on Friday as Sebastian Vettel claimed P1 with Mark Webber third fastest.

After Mercedes dominated the opening session with Nico Rosberg leading a 1-2 for the Brackley squad, Red Bull showed plenty of pace in the afternoon session.

Defending World Champion Vettel and Webber dominated at the top on the medium tyres early in the session and they were also fast on the soft rubber later on.

Webber was the first man to sample the softs 30 minutes into the session and he immediately went top with a 1:30.683, but he didn't stay there for long as his team-mate posted the benchmark of 1:30.416 to hit the front.

Rosberg got sandwiched between the two Red Bulls with a 1:30.651 while his team-mate Lewis Hamilton was down in P8 and 0.888 off the pace of Vettel. The two Mercs, along with just about all the other teams, focused mostly on long runs on the medium tyres later in the session.

Lotus, who are coming off a forgettable weekend at Silverstone, were fourth and fifth fastest with Romain Grosjean posting a 1:30.843 and his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen just five hundredths of a second behind him.

Another team who will be much happier after FP2 is Ferrari after Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa found themselves within one second of Vettel's best effort. Alonso was P5 with a 1:31.056 with his Brazilian team-mate hot on his heels with a 1:31.059. The duo completed 80 laps between them.

McLaren's Jenson Button and Paul di Resta of Force India completed the top 10, but they were more than one second off the pace of the fastest Red Bull.

Jules Bianchi, who sat out the morning session with Rodolfo Gonzalez doing the driving duties, completed only 10 laps as he was feeling under the weather and his Marussia team decided it is best if he rests ahead of qualifying on Saturday.

One person who will be breathing a sigh of relief is Paul Hembery from Pirelli as none of the drivers suffered any tyre problems. The Grand Prix Drivers' Assocation had threatend to boycott the German GP if there were any repeat of the tyre issues that took place at Silverstone.
