Nico Rosberg hopes Mercedes' form will continue after the "extremely happy" driver claimed the victory in Monte Carlo.

Despite starting from pole position, Rosberg downplayed his chances of the winning the Monaco Grand Prix as race pace has proven to be Mercedes' Achiles Heel.

However, instead of falling back like he did last time out in Barcelona, Rosberg mainted his P1 position from start to finish. And he did so during three restarts.

"I'm extremely happy to win this race," said the two-time grand prix winner.

"We've had such a difficult time the last couple races and droppig back so much.

"That was a little bit in back of mind but it was OK. I hope this is going to last.

"Today, the team gave me a great car. It's really fantastic to see how much they have been able to improve in a short space of time."

The German, who grew up on the streets of Monaco, did however, conced that the "track suited" Mercedes better than others.

He added: "It's amazing. This is my home, I've grown up here all my life and it's really special. The whole weekend went perfectly."

As for his 78-lap grand prix, which lasted 2 hours 17 minutes, the Mercedes admitted that his W04 made much better use of its tyres, which allowed him to control the pace.

"I had a terrible start and I was close with Sebastian and Lewis but after that I controlled the pace.

"The car was really good, the tyres held on okay and that was really the key, so a massive thanks to the team.

"I'm ecstatic."
