Race: Hamilton cruises to Canadian win

Lewis Hamilton won his fourth Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon, unchallenged despite Nico Rosberg keeping him within his sights.

Starting from pole position for the fourth time at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Hamilton eased ahead of Rosberg off the line.

It was anything but a blitz as the reigning World Champion slowly pulled away from his team-mate. Taking tenths at a time, Hamilton's lead was up to 2.6s after 10 laps, 3.9s after 20 and it was up to 4.5s when he pitted on lap 28.

Rosberg came in a lap later and re-emerged in second place. Although he was not able to leapfrog Hamilton, he did reduce the deficit to 1.4s. That increased up to 2.2s as Rosberg was informed his brake wear was "critical" and that he needed to manage it before launching an attack on Hamilton.

With 30 laps remaining, Rosberg was back on the pace as he against cut the gap to Hamilton only for a small lock up at the hairpin to extend it once again. The gap hovered around 1.5s as Rosberg kept his team-mate honest as they raced towards the chequered flag.

With both drivers questioning their fuel loads, Hamilton raced to the victory - his fourth of this season - taking it by 2.285s ahead of Rosberg. He extended his lead in the Drivers' Championship to 17 points.

Kimi Raikkonen spent the first stint of the race running in third place. The Finn was the first of the front runners to pit and came out fourth. However, a spin as he exited the hairpin cost him time and meant that when Valtteri Bottas pitted, he exited the pits still in third place.

With Raikkonen lapping about two seconds behind his compatriot, he came in for a second pit stop on lap 40 (the only one of the leading four to stop twice). He came out 19s behind Bottas but quickly began to close him down.

However, as his supersofts wore down so too did his pace and Bottas was able to hold onto third, his and Williams' first podium result of this season. Raikkonen was fourth.

Sebastian Vettel had an eventful Canadian GP. The Ferrari driver started 18th on the grid after car troubles in qualifying coupled with a five-place grid penalty for overtaking under reds.

He spent his Sunday afternoon working his way through traffic, including a slow first stop, a "touch" with Fernando Alonso, and a "I did not touch him" with Nico Hulkenberg, to bring his Ferrari home in fifth place.

Felipe Massa, who pulled off some of the day's best overtakes as well as a brilliant moment of side-by-side racing with Marcus Ericsson, was sixth having started P15 while Pastor Maldonado was seventh as he netted his first points of this season.

Hulkenberg was eighth ahead of Daniil Kvyat while Romain Grosjean crossed the line in ninth place. The Lotus driver had five seconds added to his time for causing a collision with Will Stevens but still held onto P10 as Sergio Perez was 19s behind.

There were three retirements as both McLarens and Roberto Merhi failed to finish. Fernando Alonso, who on lap 24 was told to save fuel, retired on lap 48, pulling into the pits. 10 laps later Jenson Button joined him. Merhi pitted and parked his Manor on lap 62 of 70.
