Lewis Hamilton set the pace in the second of Friday's two practices in Hungary, edging out the Renault of Nelson Piquet Jr.
Third place went to McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen.
Report: With the track temperature reaching just 31'C due to the overcast skies the session began with the two Toro Rosso drivers exchanging blows with first Sebastien Bourdais and then Sebastian vettel going fastest. They were soon dethroned by Fernando Alonso who clocked a 1:22.186 to take the P1 slot.
His reign was short-lived as the two McLaren drivers hit the track with first Lewis Hamilton and then Heikki Kovalainen setting new fastest lap times. Kimi Raikkonen and Nick Heidfeld slotted in behind them before Felipe Massa put his shark finned Ferrari ahead of the BMW then overtaking his team-mate on his next lap.
Vettel, for the second successive session, found himself stuck out on track when his Toro Rosso yet again broke down after he'd completed only five laps.
Half an hour into the session it was the McLarens, Ferraris, BMWs and Bourdais and Fernando Alonso completing the top eight while Vettel's car made its way back to the pits for repairs.
Timo Glock placed his Toyota in fifth place behind the Ferraris only for team-mate Jarno Trulli to take it off him while Kubica sandwiched himself between the two Ferraris.
Hamilton, using the super-soft rubber, overhauled Kovalainen for first place, putting in a 1:20.891 to edge 0.133s ahead of his McLaren team-mate. Massa improved to second place while Nico Rosberg broke into the top eight.
With half an hour to play Kovalainen returned to the top of the timesheets with a 1:20.760 only to be overthrown by Hamilton moments later, the Brit going 0.160s quicker.
At the back of the pack the two Honda drivers struggled for pace with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello only quicker than the stricken Vettel.
Raikkonen moved up to fourth place on the super-soft tyres only to be knocked down one place when Fernando Alonso improved to third.
Hamilton came out with five minutes left to set two fastest sectors to lower the benchmark to a 1:22.554 with Nelson Piquet Jr going second.
