Jenson Button reckons he's responsible for Michael Schumacher's return to F1 - and the German's lackluster results.
Schumacher returned to F1 this season after a three-year lay-off, signing a three-year deal with Button's former team Brawn, now Mercedes GP.
"The Germans should be grateful (to me)," Button told a Sports Bild journalist.
Asked why, he responded: "Because with my move to McLaren at the end of last year, it allowed Michael Schumacher to comeback."
But, while the Germans - and other Schumacher fans - may be grateful to Button for opening the door for Schumacher, the Brit admits they could also berate him for being responsible for the German's poor results.
"The current car is different from what Michael is accustomed to," he said. "Michael likes a car that steers directly. But the Mercedes understeers very strongly. It was always like that because I wanted it to be like that."
Button, though, has warned against writing off Schumacher, saying that next year he'll have more say in the car and could
"One should not judge him before next season as he will have more influence on the development of the car. His comeback decision was quite late and the basic characteristics of the current Mercedes were already in place long before his signature."
