Prac Two: Vettel hits the front

Prac Two: Vettel hits the front

Sebastian Vettel proved to be the one to beat around the Circuit of the Americas in FP2, quickly on long runs, short runs and both compounds.

Having lost time in the first session, the drivers were quickly into the action with new Lotus signing Heikki Kovalainen posting a 1:40.335 to get the timesheets moving. The Finn soon lost out to his team-mate Romain Grosjean as Lotus led the early running ahead of Adrian Sutil and Jenson Button.

It was all change when Sebastian Vettel ventured out. After a slow start to the day on a heavy fuel in FP1, he came out flying in the afternoon's session and went quickest on his very first flying lap, a 1:38.352 for the reigning World Champ.

Vettel lowered the benchmark time to a 1:38.211 while Mark Webber slotted into second behind his team-mate, some 0.449s down. Lewis Hamilton was third when the drivers headed back into the pits after their first run of the afternoon.

Swapping the hard tyres for the mediums after the first 30 minutes, Nico Rosberg went 1:37.785 but lost out to Webber who posted a 1:37.420. Kovalainen climbed to third place.

Vettel's first flying lap on the medium tyres was ruined when he had to back off after coming up behind traffic in the form of Romain Grosjean. After two cooling down lap he went at it again and posted a 1:37.305 to go a tenth quicker than Webber.

However, it wasn't only on the short runs that the German was flying, he was also easily up on his rivals when everyone switched to heavy fuel loads for the final 30 minutes.

While the likes of Alonso, Kovalainen and Button were in the 1:44s, Vettel was in the high 1:42s, low 1:43s before being told by his race engineer to keep it in the 1:43s.

Meanwhile, Max Chilton had an early shower as the Marussia driver suffered brake failure and was forced to park it with just minutes remaining.
