Luca: Double-points finish too artificial

Luca di Montezemolo admits Ferrari are unimpressed with the decision to award double points for the final race of the season, adding that the idea could be scrapped after one year.

In an attempt to make sure that the F1 season goes down to the final race of the year in Abu Dhabi, Bernie Ecclestone came up with the proposal to award double points. The teams backed the idea with the vote being made in private.

However, several members of the F1 community have criticised the decision with four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel calling it "absurd" and former Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine describing it as "tinsel town bulls***".

Di Montezemolo has also expressed his unhappiness with the rule during Ferrari's annual Christmas lunch at Fiorano.

"There has been this decision to give a lot of points at the last race, but I am not enthusiastic about it," he said. "It looks too much artificial. We will see.

"I remember when they did three points [for winning] in soccer to avoid all the teams going for 0-0, 0-0 [draws]. But this was from the first to the last match."

Di Montezemolo has called F1 teams to a summit at Maranello in January and he will to discuss the future of the sport, but he admits it's unlikely that the double-points finish will be dropped for 2014.

"I am personally in some doubt," he said. "Maybe the best way is to do one year to find out. It was unanimous agreement to do it. We will look at it but in future we need to have more involvement of tifosi (fans), media, the stakeholders of F1.

"Maybe you can give a gold car for the last race, five more points, 10 more points, but this..."

As for Ferrari's veto rights he added: "I think Ferrari's veto right has to be used if it is necessary on something that is more important and more deep for Formula 1.

"But I will not be surprised if this decision in the future will be changed just as F1 changed many times the qualifying approach, to give an example."
