Vettel's run blamed for poor TV figures

Vettel's run blamed for poor TV figures

Bernie Ecclestone admits Sebastian Vettel's romp to a fourth successive World title cost Formula One dearly last season.

Winning nine grands prix in succession, the Red Bull racer clinched his fourth Drivers' Championship with three races to spare.

But while the result was great for the 26-year-old, Formula One as a whole suffered, losting 50 million television viewers.

"The less-than-competitive nature of the final few rounds, culminating in the Championship being decided ahead of the races in the USA and Brazil, events which often bring substantial audiences, had a predictable impact on reach," revealed Ecclestone.

However, he added that the "overall effect (of the audience drop) was exaggerated further still when you consider the calendar was one race shorter in 2013."

This season, Formula One has taken steps to keep the excitement and the Championship alive until the final lap in Abu Dhabi by offering double points.

"One thing I am sure of is that this coming season will not only offer a heightened level of unpredictability, but renewed excitement and fierce competition," the F1 supremo stated.

The TV figures have been published in F1's global media report for 2013.
