Red Bull’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey will act as the ‘lead visionary’ for the Veloce team in the new Extreme E Championship.

Newey is regarded as one of the greatest designers in Formula 1 history having provided Sebastian Vettel with the machinery for his four-consecutive Drivers’ Championships between 2010-13 and Red Bull’s same achievement in the Constructors’.

The 60-year-old also designed title-winning challengers for Williams and McLaren in the 1990s, and now he will expand into entirely new territory.

The Extreme E Championship, which will begin in 2021, will see 12 teams and drivers racing in fully-electric 4×4 SUV cars.

Greenland has been announced as the series’ first and one of five race locations.

“Everyone involved in Veloce Racing is extremely passionate about racing, competition and cutting-edge technology, as well as tackling environmental issues that face the world today, so we couldn’t be happier to be taking part in Extreme E,” Newey is quoted by Autosport.

“The series is an exceptional platform for developing new technology, drawing attention to the earth’s environmental challenges and driving change.

“Veloce will play an active role in as many of Extreme E’s legacy projects as possible to help regenerate the local environments. We now can’t wait to get started on our campaign.”
