Wehrlein ‘ready’ for a Mercedes promotion

Pascal Wehrlein believes he is “ready” to step up should Mercedes decide that he is the best man to replace Nico Rosberg.

Wehrlein entered Formula 1 this past season on the back of a championship-winning campaign in Germany’s DTM series.

He made history in Austria when he became only the second driver to score for Manor as he took the chequered flag in tenth place at the Red Bull Ring.

With several appearances in Q2, the 22-year-old’s season ended with a ‘Rookie of the Year’ prize at the Autosport Awards.

Despite only one season in F1, the German reckons he is ready should Mercedes call him up to replace the retired Rosberg.

“One season in F1 is not a lot, but I feel ready for the job, confident enough,” he told Motorsport.com

“Now the decision is on the bosses, Toto’s phone must have been overheating since Friday, many drivers have called him, but I respect that process and I want to go for the best option.”

Wehrlein is hoping that his time testing the new wider 2017 tyres for Pirelli will be a positive on his CV.

“I think I did most days with the 2017 tyres, and it’s very important to have that experience!” he added.
