Max Chilton was delighted with Marussia's first outing in the MR03, saying his team did an 'exceptional" job.

Marussia were forced to delay the new car's debut due to small teething problems which meant the car did not leave the factory as planned.

Finally arriving at Jerez on Thursday, Chilton had the honour of doing the first few laps in the car.

"A real demonstration of the step forward we've made as a team," he said.

"After the biggest rule change in F1 history, and for a team of our size and resources, I think we've done an exceptional job.

"Congratulations to the whole team and our new Scuderia Ferrari colleagues for a superb reward."

And although the Brit, who is entering his second season in F1 with Marussia, managed just five laps, he was pleased not have encountered any problems.

"We got a good clean run on our installation lap and completed four further laps without issue, so I'm really pleased.

"Five laps are far more important than you can imagine, as every detail of the data will be pored over and in the weeks ahead of the Bahrain tests to ensure we can continue making good progress."
