Alexander Rossi is gearing up for his debut at a grand prix weekend after Caterham confirmed his participation on Friday in Spain.
Rossi has previous F1 experience, having driven for Caterham at last season's Young Driver test in Abu Dhabi.
However, his run during Friday's first free practice for the Spanish GP will be the American's first competitive outing.
"I am looking forward to getting back into the F1 car in Spain and I want to thank the team for the chance to run in FP1 in Barcelona," said Rossi.
"I have a clear goal for the session - make sure I run to the plan set by the engineers, not make any mistakes and learn as much as I can over the whole weekend."
The 20-year-old Formula Renault 3.5 driver will replace Heikki Kovalainen in FP1.
