Fernando Alonso isn't disappointed with third in the Bahrain grid after all it is on Sundays where Ferrari are at their best.

The double World Champion had been one of the favourites to take pole position after setting the pace in final practice and again in Q1.

However, it was not be as he lost out to Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel when a mistake on his final flying lap prevented him from challenging for even a front row slot.

"We tried to complete the second lap and it was similar until the last corner," Alonso said. "On exit, I saw I was one tenth slower so we decided to come in and save one lap on those tyres. You never know if you have to use them again."

The Spaniard, though, heads into the 57-lap Bahrain Grand Prix felling confident about his chances after demonstrating at the previous race in China, which he won, the Ferrari are still at their best on Sunday afternoons.

"Normally in qualifying we struggle a lot and the car is very competitive in the race. We start with the leaders and fight for the podium."

He added: "It is true that on Sundays normally we improve our performance and are more competitive on Sunday than Saturday. "On Friday the long run was more or less OK and there was no big trouble with tyres.

"Tomorrow will be a good opportunity for us to get consistency and we can fight for the podium - and maybe a win would be even better."
