Massa: Ferrari must up the pace

Felipe Massa concedes Ferrari are going to need pace in both qualifying and the race if they want to challenge for the Monaco GP win.

Given the tight, twisty nature of the Monte Carlo street circuit, a good grid slot is important as since 2000 the race has been won from the front row on 10 occasions.

Qualifying, though, has not been Ferrari's strong suit in recent seasons and this year is no different.

The team has secured just one front row starting position this season thanks to Massa's P2 in Malaysia.

But should Ferrari get that right on Saturday, Massa admits they are also going to need race pace to fight for the podium on Sunday.

"The weekend has got off on the right foot, the car behaved well and I managed to find a good pace," said Massa.

"I finished in the top five in both sessions, which is important in such an unpredictable event as the Monaco Grand Prix.

"However, we are aware that we still have much work to do.

"Now we will analyse all the data available to try and find the right direction to go in, because here it's vital to have a car that is both competitive in qualifying and performs consistently in the race."

The Brazilian finished Thursday's second practice fourth on the timesheets, 0.519s behind pace-setter Nico Rosberg.

"Mercedes has shown that it is quicker and it will not be easy to get ahead of them in qualifying, but I am sure we have what's needed to take the fight to them."
