Grid penalty for loose wheels

Friday 26-July-2013 13:21

Drivers will be handed a ten-place grid penalty should their team release the car from the pits without all four wheels securely attached.

Earlier this season, FOM cameraman Paul Allen was left with a broken collarbone and broken ribs after a loose wheel came off Mark Webber's RB9 following a pit stop in Germany.

Red Bull Racing were fined €30,000 for an unsafe pit release with the team revealing that the "go" signal was accidentally been sent by the right rear-gun man.

Should the same error transpire again - with Red Bull or any other outfit - the team will face more than just a fine with reports emerging that grid penalties will now be incurred.

Following a meeting with the powers-that-be in Hungary on Thursday, it was revealed that teams will now face a ten-place grid penalty at the following race should they release a car without all the wheels properly attached.

A proposal for a minimum pit stop time was rejected while the pit lane speed has been reduced to 80km/h.
