Perez: McLaren deal pretty much done

Sergio Perez expects to remain at McLaren next season having revealed that there are just a few documents still to finalise.

The Mexican racer joined McLaren at the end of last season after an impressive year with Sauber in which he netted three podium finishes.

But despite moving on to a Championship-winning team, this year has been anything but a success for Perez and McLaren.

The team's MP4-28 has been woefully off the pace, leaving the 23-year-old and his team-mate Jenson Button scrapping just for points.

The trying start, though, has done little to deter Perez or McLaren who are on the verge of concluding a deal for next season.

"Yeah, everything is pretty much done," Perez said during Thursday's FIA press conference at the Marina Bay circuit. "But the right thing to do is to ask Martin [Whitmarsh] about it.

"We have been having some discussions about the contract which is now done and we are just finalising the final docs, but I cannot give much detail about them."

Perez, however, did concede that this season had not been up to scratch, adding that fifth in the Constructors' Championship is now McLaren's revised goal for the campaign.

"Of course, it is not a secret that we haven't had the year that we were hoping to have.

"Definitely we must try to finish as high as possible in the next seven races and maximise the full potential.

"At Monza we should have got more points than we did, so I think definitely we get all the points that we can. If in the end we beat Force India, then that is good for us.
