Perez ready to prove himself again

Sergio Perez has to do it all over again and show F1's top teams what he is capable of at Force India, but he is confident he will pull it off.

Having secured a race seat at McLaren this year on the back of two excellent seasons at Sauber, things didn't go according to plan for the Mexican at Woking.

With the team failing to produce a car that could challenge at the front of the grid, Perez finished 11th in the standings with a fifth place in India his best performance of the campaign.

McLaren then decided to replace him with rookie Kevin Magnussen and that gave Force India the chance to snap up the 23-year-old for the 2014 season.

Asked by Sky Sports Online if he now has to prove himself again, he replied: "Yeah, yeah, of course. To prove myself to the top teams once again. I did it last year so I don't see any reason why I cannot do it again. I have confidence in my talent and I know what I can do."

By the time McLaren told him that he was not in their plans for 2014, several teams had already confirmed their line-ups for 2014, leaving Perez with very few options.

But he jumped at the chance to move to Force India.

"I was close because the decision [from McLaren] came really late and I was not willing to join the smaller teams," he said.

"I'm very hungry and willing to prove myself in Formula 1 so I always thought that maybe if I don't get the drive at Force India it was going to be more difficult for me to stay in F1. Luckily we managed to get it and I'm really looking forward to the future ahead."

Despite moving from one of the top teams in F1 to a mid-table squad, Perez is optimistic that it will be a good move for his career.

"You never know what the future holds, especially in Formula 1. All what I'm hoping is to look back in a few years' time and say that it was the best that could have happened for my career," he said. "Hopefully by joining Force India it will be really good for my career in Formula 1. Obviously I have big targets in F1, big dreams, and I want to make them happen."
