STR9 breaks covers at Jerez

Monday 27-January-2014 16:43

Toro Rosso's new Renault-powered STR9 was unveiled to the world in the Jerez paddock on the eve of pre-season testing.

Jean-Eric Vergne and his new team-mate Daniil Kvyat were on hand in the paddock to take the covers off the new car.

Decked out in the traditional colours, the new car features a sharp dip at the nose in a 'finger' such as seen on the McLaren and Sauber.

The STR9 will be powered by Renault after Toro Rosso parted ways with Ferrari.

"The season 2014 will be very interesting from many different points of view. I call it a year of new strategy and news," Autosport quotes team boss Franz Tost as saying.

"We have had to design a new nose, new sidepods and new wings - never before have we started so early with the designs.

"The sidepods are bigger than in the past as we had to find space for the radiators. The team did a good job to place it without losing aero performance.

"Never before the last weeks have we worked as hard as with the STR9. The team was in factory until 2am to finish it but we managed it."

Last season the team finished seventh in the Championship and this year Tost has urged his team to up the pace.

"As for what role Scuderia Toro Rosso will play," he said, "it's too early to tell and even harder than usual to make any predictions.

"What I can say is that we must do better than in 2013 and move up the order."
