A great start for Vergne

Jean-Eric Vergne had no complaints with his Saturday afternoon in Melbourne as the Toro Rosso driver qualified sixth for the Australian GP.

While some may argue that the rain proved to be a great leveller with both Toro Rosso drivers challenging inside the top ten, Vergne feels it was all down to his STR9.

In Toro Rosso's first grand prix under Renault power, the Frenchman clocked a 1:45.864 which meant he claimed sixth place on the grid for Sunday's race.

His rookie team-mate Daniil Kvyat will start eighth despite a late crash.

"It's a very good feeling, a great start to the season," said Vergne.

"After so much hard work during winter testing, to get two cars into Q3 is a great result and I'm very happy.

"I think we have a good car for the season, I believe in the team and in myself so I can't really say that I'm surprised.

"The guys did a very good job and I want to thank everybody for getting two cars in the top 10."

Looking ahead to Sunday's 58-lap Australian GP, the Toro Rosso driver reckons he and Kvyat will push each other onto better.

"Thinking of the race pace I still do not know if we are where we want to be, we just have to go on pushing as much as possible and hopefully we will have a good fight tomorrow.

"Congratulations to Daniil! It's always positive to have a good team-mate to push each other."
