'Hard racing should not be punished'

Former F1 driver Mika Salo, who was the drivers' steward in Bahrain, says he applauds the hard racing seen during the grand prix.

There were several battles up and down the field with the most notable being the McLaren tussle.

Battling on several occasions, Sergio Perez took the fight to his team-mate Jenson Button and pushed him hard. Too hard at times as the Mexican drove into the back of Button.

The duo, though, both reached the chequered flag and inside in the points at a race where Salo hailed the "good" racing.

"Bahrain we saw some really good racing," the 46-year-old told MTV3.

"In fact I encourage just this kind of wheel against the rim racing and fighting hard. It should not be punished.

As for the McLaren battle, he said: "After the race Button was a bit hot that Perez hit him from behind. Such a thing could, of course, spoil both races.

"Perez drove aggressively but it was good race driving."
