A different year but the same story as Sebastian Vettel claimed yet another Indian P1 as he set the pace ahead of Mark Webber in Friday's first practice.
On a hazy Buddh International Circuit, Sergio Perez got proceedings underway with a 1:30.953. Shaving over a second off his time on his next lap, Perez was told by his McLaren team to "please protect your front left tyre" - he was on only the four lap of his run!
Perez lowered the benchmark to a 1:28.207 before pulling into the pits at the end of his first run. He was the only driver to set a time in the first 30 minutes.
Perez's departure coincided with the arrival of several of his rivals and by the halfway stage there were 10 times on the board. Perez led ahead of Valtteri Bottas by 0.226s while Pastor Maldonado was third and Jenson Button fourth. A minute later, Button hit the front with a 1:27.995.
The Brit's reign did not last long as Nico Rosberg overhauled him by 0.058s before going onto extend his advantage with a 1:27.217. It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Merc driver, though, as he told his team that he was experience "too much oversteer" which was apparent when he ran a bit wide a few times.
Shortly after Sebastian Vettel signaled his arrival as the Red Bull racer went quickest only for Rosberg to come back at him on his very next lap. This sparked a battle between the two for the top spot with Vettel then taking two-tenths off his compatriot's time.
Fernando Alonso, who had worked his way up to fourth place with 32 minutes remaining, ran into problems and was forced to limp back to the pits with what appeared to be a gearbox issue.
Back in the action, Romain Grosjean climbed to third as he closed up on Vettel and Rosberg while Mark Webber went fourth quickest ahead of Button and Perez.
With drivers running on old tyres in the final 20 minutes there were few changes to the timesheets although Webber did improve to second on his 16th place on a set of mediums while Hamilton climbed to fifth.
But in the end, it was Vettel who triumphed by 0.188s over Webber.
