Magnussen eager to emulate Hamilton

Friday 03-January-2014 12:04

Kevin Magnussen is looking follow in the footsteps of Lewis Hamilton, confident McLaren know how to get the best out of a rookie.

This season the Danish driver will take to the grid for McLaren having signed a long-term deal with the Woking team.

Magnussen's arrival marks the first time since Hamilton in 2007 that McLaren have entrusted a rookie driver with the car.

Hamilton proved that trust well-placed as he raced to second in the Championship and Magnussen is hoping to emulate the Brit's achievements.

"He [Hamilton] had great success at McLaren arriving there as a rookie and it is definitely possible to do," said Magnussen in an interview with Autosport.

"I know he worked incredibly hard, and the good thing is that I am in the same team as he was.

"They [McLaren] have had a rookie before; they know how to treat a rookie and how to work with a rookie. That is good, a really good thing."

The 21-year-old will arrive at McLaren with a lot less F1 miles under his belt than Hamilton had due to limited testing.

However, Magnussen reckons the early start drivers get these days means he will be well prepared.

"My generation of drivers have all started very early. The previous generation of drivers started a bit later.

"So if you take a driver at 19 from my generation, he will be better prepared at 19 than a driver was from the previous generation because we have started earlier.

"I am not saying that I am 100 per cent ready for F1. You will always feel like you can do more, and you need a little bit more time."
