Winter tyres to be used during testing

A tyre designed to be used in cold, winter conditions will be used during the Jerez test this week.

"In 2013 the teams lost some pre-season running due to excessively cold conditions in Spain: we even saw some ice on the track. To combat this we've developed a special 'winter' version of the hard compound," Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery confirmed ahead of the start of the only pre-season test in Europe.

"This will be used for the Jerez test only and it is designed to work effectively even in cold conditions."

The test in Jerez was brought forward due to give the teams more opportunity to analyze the data that will be generated in Spain, ahead of the two tests in the searing heat of Bahrain.

The tyre manufacturer tested a 2014 prototype in Bahrain during December last year, which is believed to be more conservative construct due to the large amount of technical changes that the Formula One is undergoing this year.

Pirelli was criticised last year for the way in which the tyres deteriorated and was forced to switch compounds in the middle of the season.
