Rosberg unsure of Merc's true pace

Friday 31-January-2014 15:40

Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes are no closer to knowing where they are in the pecking than they were prior to the Jerez test.

Mercedes proved to be one of the more reliable teams at Jerez these past four days with Rosberg amassing 91 laps on the final day to go with the 97 he covered on Day Two.

And although Mercedes never topped a timesheet, they were up there near the top.

Rosberg, who handed the W05 over to Lewis Hamilton on Friday afternoon and therefore missed the best track conditions, said of his final day: "It was a good day for us. I'm pleased. It's a decent start and I had expected it to be a lot worse.

"The goal coming here was to get a lot of mileage and we have managed to achieve that quite well. It's a surprise to do so many laps because it's been a mission with the new technology.

"We have no idea where we are on pace so it's really early days. It's not possible to give a mark out of ten because pace is important and we have no idea where we are on pace.

"Nothing was all-out, not even the driver! It was just important to do a lot of kilometres."

But while Mercedes had a solid opening run, the same cannot be said of reigning World Champions Red Bull Racing who managed just 21 laps the entire test.

Rosberg, however, insists he's not paying attention to what happens in other garages.

"I'm not thinking about our competitors at the moment, I'm not even looking at what they are doing. We are just focused on us," he told Sky Sports F1.
