No pre-season predictions from Alonso

Although Australia is unlikely to offer a true picture of F1's pecking order, Fernando Alonso feels we will at least known a "bit more" come Saturday's qualifying.

Having undergone a major overhaul of the regulations, including the introduction of 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engines with ERS, many are wondering whether F1's pecking order is also in for a shake-up.

And if pre-season testing is anything to go by, it could happen.

While Mercedes and Williams came to the fore at the final test in Bahrain, reigning World Champions Red Bull struggled to string together a set of laps never mind quick ones.

However, Alonso says fans will have to wait until Saturday's qualifying for the real picture to begin to unfold.

"I think it's very difficult to tell how competitive we are at the moment. We'll get some answers in 24 hours or 48 hours, we will know a little bit more than we know now," he said.

"The car itself and the technology that Formula One brought this year are a little bit complex to everyone.

"We are learning and we are developing the car every day that we work on it. As I said, a little bit of an unknown situation for everybody. We just need to put everything together, maximise what we have, and see where we are."

The Ferrari driver also weighed in on Thursday's confirmation of changes to Q3.

This season drivers will have an extra two minutes to run in Q3 giving them time for two separate runs while they will now start the grand prix on the tyres they used to set their fastest time in Q2 meaning they have no reason not to contest Q3.

"I think it will not be a huge difference, from the outside especially," said the Spaniard.

""OK there were some cars that didn't run in Q3 or they only did one run in Q3 and now maybe we'll see an extra lap from everybody but apart from that I think it's not a huge change in approach in the qualifying for the teams and the drivers.

"Anyway, I think this change is welcome, to see more cars on tracks. I arrive many times with no new sets for Q3, so now I'm happy."
