Vettel named Sportsman of the Year

Thursday 27-March-2014 04:06

Following his record-breaking 2013 campaign, Sebastian Vettel added another trophy to his collection, the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.

Last year, on his way to a fourth successive Drivers' Championship title, Vettel claimed a record-breaking nine consecutive race wins in a single campaign.

He also equalled the record for 13 wins in one season and became the youngest ever four-time Champion.

It was therefore no surprise that he was nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award, which he took ahead of Usain Bolt, LeBron James, Rafael Nadal, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Farah.

"It's a big honour. It's one of the most special trophies I have received," Vettel said on collecting the prize.

"If I've learned anything tonight, surely it's the fact that sport can be a very, very big inspiration.

"I've come here and seen many heroes of mine... this (award) is very inspirational, very special."

Vettel's award saw him become only the second F1 driver to be named World Sportsman of the Year with Michael Schumacher having previous won it.
