Sirotkin feels the pinch

Wednesday 09-April-2014 05:53

That old saying about needing to fill big shoes came into play in Bahrain on Tuesday when Sergey Sirotkin revealed his too small shoes cost him speed.

The 18-year-old Russian teenager took part in Tuesday's opening day of testing at the Sakhir circuit as Sauber prepare him a future in Formula One.

Sirotkin covered 75 laps, more than a full race distance, as he clocked vital miles towards his FIA super license.

He finished the day with a 1:39.023, which put him eighth on the timesheets, over three seconds off the pace.

"Everything felt great," he revealed. "It was the first time for me in Bahrain and I liked the track.

"In comparison to what I am used to driving in World Series by Renault, I have quite a lot more engine power and more acceleration with the Sauber C33.

"On my fast lap in the morning I made a few mistakes, so I probably lost a second. But all in all, it was a good start to the session."

However, in the afternoon it was Sirotkin's shoes and not the car that cost him speed.

"In the afternoon we had some difficulties with my shoes. They were too small, so it was pretty painful when I was braking. When we changed the shoes, it was still not the best and difficult to drive.

"It was not easy, but I am glad we completed the 300kms. We know that there is a lot of potential for improvement and we should all be happy with this."
