Alonso 'happy' with Friday's work

Fernando Alonso had no complaints after Friday's running in China, which saw him finish second on the timesheets.

Although it has been a difficult start to this season for Ferrari, the Scuderia showed some improvements on Friday in Shanghai.

While Alonso was quickest in the opening practice session, he finished the day second fastest having clocked a 1:38.456 on the soft Pirelli tyres, which put him 0.141s behind Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton.

There was more good news for the Spaniard, though, as his F14T also looked to have improved race-pace.

However, Alonso admits Friday's pace and lessons may count for very little given that rain is forecast for Saturday's final practice and qualifying.

"All Fridays are the same, a day when you especially need to test the tyres to adapt to the circuit and on this front, maybe it was less useful than usual, because the forecast for tomorrow suggests rain is on the way," he said.

"We have brought some small updates here, which we already tried at the Bahrain test. Everything worked well and that's good news. Leaving aside the performance of the others, I am happy with what we have done today.

"At every race, all the teams bring something new and we must try and make an additional step forward if we want to be competitive."

And with all eyes on the weather, the double World Champion concedes that Saturday's rain could force the teams to gamble on Sunday when it is expected to be dry.

"This track is particularly tough on tyres, with the Softs especially suffering from graining over a long run, so it will be important to work out the tyre plan for Sunday.

"If it rains tomorrow, we will definitely have less information for the race and we will have to rely on guesswork. Let's hope we make the right choices."
