Lauda backs Rosberg to bounce back

Thursday 01-May-2014 13:03

Niki Lauda has backed Nico Rosberg to get back on level terms with Lewis Hamilton after coming second in recent races.

Although Rosberg won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and holds a four-point lead over Hamilton in the standings, it is the Brit who has the advantage out on track.

Winning the last three grands prix while Rosberg could only manage second behind his team-mate, Hamilton is being backed as this year's title favourite.

Lauda, however, reckons Rosberg has what it takes to fight back.

"Yes he will," he said when asked by Autosport if Rosberg can recover. "And I think he will because racing drivers have this [mentality].

"If they are blown off, like he was [in China], he will get himself new strategies worked out to not let these things happen again."

The Austrian, who fills the role of non-executive director at Mercedes, concedes it won't be easy as Hamilton is showing "outstanding" form.

He added: "I have to say that the way Lewis is driving, from the first race until now, for me is outstanding. The guy makes no mistakes.

"He is absolutely on top of everything.

"He understands the car, which is more complicated than in the past.

"He understands the tyres, and drives at the absolute perfect way on the edge.

"He does not do any mistakes, and I have to say he is on a high like I have never seen before. Outstanding!"
