Lauda impressed by domination

Niki Lauda believes the dominant form of Mercedes so far in the 2014 Formula One season is far more impressive than Red Bull's results

last year.

So far, Mercedes have won all four races of the year and the only time the Brackley outfit missed out on a 1-2 was during the season-opener in Australia, where Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire early on.

With several new regulations coming into effect this year, Lauda - who is non-executive chairman at Mercedes - believes their achievements so far is more impressive than Sebastian Vettel's nine consecutive wins in 2013.

"This year we have new engines, new gearboxes, new electric brakes, and new cars," Lauda told Autosport.

"And the Mercedes cars finished the first four races, which for me is the outstanding result.

"If you have shi*** engines like last year, and nine races in a row like Vettel, to finish all of them, this is easy.

"But to do the same now, with four races in a row, I think is an outstanding performance."

While Mercedes dominated proceedings for most of winter testing, Lauda admitted that he was surprised by how well things have gone for them during the season so far.

"I never expected it," he continued

"For me, the most important thing is that we got the reliability going.

"We got everything together in a proper way.

"The others made it in the past, but never in the first year of completely new regulations."
