Alonso down plays Spanish podium

Fernando Alonso has quashed Spanish expectations ahead of his home grand prix, saying it would be a "lie" if he said a top-three result was possible.

Although the Ferrari driver, who is the defending Spanish GP Champ, arrived in Barcelona on the back of a third place in China, he has downplayed the prospect of adding a second this weekend.

Speaking during Thursday's press conference, he said: "We cannot start the weekend thinking to be on the podium or thinking to win the race.

"That will be creating wrong and false targets to everyone that will come here.

"We finished ninth and 10th in Bahrain, and we did a podium in China because we put some things together that Sunday.

"So it is not that we are in a position now that we will fight for the podium here. We will do our best.

"We know it will be a tough weekend, and you never know, it is sport, anything can happen, but today sitting here if I tell you I will fight for the podium, probably I will lie to you and I don't want to do so for all the people that are coming."

The double World Champion admitted that Ferrari are not where they want to be after four races.

Not only is their F14T lacking compared to the front-running Mercedes but Alonso says others are also ahead in the pecking order.

"We're not in a position we're happy with. We have some deficit to the top teams, especially Mercedes.

"We'll try to decrease that gap and get closer, but to do that we need to make bigger steps than the other teams."
